Continuous generative AI development for threat detection urged

Both U.S. Department of Defense Chief Information Officer John Sherman and Defense Department Chief Digital and AI Officer Craig Martell have urged the continued development of generative AI tools to combat increasingly sophisticated cybersecurity threats, amid calls by tech luminaries for a six-month moratorium on AI system training, according to DefenseScoop. "Some have argued for a six-month pause which I personally don't advocate towards, because if we stop, guess who's not going to stop: potential adversaries overseas. We've got to keep moving," said Sherman at the AFCEA TechNet Cyber conference. Moreover, the leadership of the U.S. in generative AI could be compromised should development be halted for half a year, noted Martell, who also advised against excessive trust in the technology without the necessary safeguards. "Let's be mindful. As a collective enterprise, it's exciting. There is some real progress here let's not demur from it, we need to lean into it," Martell added.
