Deepfakes cybersecurity threat examined

Deepfakes have yet to become a significant cybersecurity threat despite their increasing sophistication, SecurityWeek. Ongoing development of the technology, lack of monetization, and laziness are key factors behind cybercriminals' non-adoption of deepfakes, said IEEE Fellow Nasir Memon, who is also a professor at New York University. Despite the lack of an imminent threat, Memon has called for a "holistic approach" in combating interactive deepfakes through the combined use of technology, user awareness, and regulations. "It will evolve over time. Were not simply going to sit down and let deepfakes destroy our world. We will develop these techniques over time," Memon said, emphasizing that security leaders should not be complacent in facing the threat of deepfakes. Further action has also been urged to stay ahead of deepfake threats. "[W]e will see greater deepfake crimes. I dont think the good guys can stay ahead with just what they are doing today," noted Memon.
