New Facebook security tool released to help users protect accounts

Facebook launched a new security tool this past week, “Security Checkup,” to acquaint users with the social media site's optional security controls.

Users will receive a reminder at the top of their News Feed about the tool, a Facebook staffer wrote in a blog post. The first step of the process involves logging out of devices that haven't been used in a long time, and the next involves turning on “login alerts,” which sends a notification whenever someone logs into a user's Facebook account from an unknown device or browser.

The security process concludes with tips for creating strong passwords. The company, per most password best practices, recommends “not using your Facebook password anywhere else online, never sharing it with anyone, and avoiding common words that may be easy to guess.”

The tool is now available for desktops and is slated for mobile release soon.
