SonicWall: Cyber threat landscape unstable

Ransomware attacks declined by 31% during the first nine months of 2022 over the same period last year, when ransomware rates reached record-high levels, but such a figure is still higher than year-round ransomware incident counts between 2017 and 2020, reports The Register. Such numbers suggest the instability of the cyber threat landscape, according to a SonicWall report. Even though ransomware attacks decreased by 51% in the U.S. and 46% in Germany from last year, other countries have been increasing significantly increased ransomware incidence. Internet of things and cryptojacking attacks have also increased by 92% and 35%, respectively. The U.S. may be experiencing fewer attacks as more threat actors exploit the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, said SonicWall CEO Robert VanKirk. "That said, we know it is only a matter of time before there is a renewed focus on North American targets, so with major increases in encrypted threats, IoT malware, cryptojacking, and new unknown variants, it's critical that cyber security leaders have all the required tools and technology to proactively detect and remediate against increasingly sophisticated and targeted threats," VanKirk added.
