Surviving Genesis Market site fails to gain traction amid suspicions

Threat actors have been cautious of the surviving .onion site of major stolen credentials marketplace Genesis Market amid fears of it being under FBI control following the marketplace's takedown last month, according to The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. Disruption of Genesis Market has also taken a toll on its competitors, with Recorded Future Cybercrime Specialist Alexander Leslie noting that Russian Market has halted new infostealer log listings beginning April 4 although Flashpoint Senior Analyst Andras Toth-Czifra observed that listings have increased by nearly 15% in mid-May than prior to the takedown. On the other hand, no increase in listings has been found in cybercrime marketplace 2easy Shop since the dismantling of Genesis Market, said Flashpoint Senior Intelligence Specialist Kateryna Zabavko. Meanwhile, UK National Crime Agency Cybercrime Unit Head of Intelligence Will Lyne noted the significant reduction in stolen data and users in Genesis Market despite the continued existence of its site on the dark web. "We have no doubt that this operation has significantly degraded trust in Genesis and its administrators," Lyne added.
