An anti-phishing tag team

A quick note on two well-regarded anti-phish organizations joining forces:

The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) and OpenDNS’ PhishTank announced today that they’re forming a research partnership. Both organizations received more than 50,000 reports of phishing scams during February, the most recent month for which data is available.

Both groups play an important role in keeping email users safe from the fraudsters lurking online, although they do so in different ways.

PhishTank relies on a complicated public voting system, by which email users can report and verify phish – or dispel reports of legitimate emails - all while having their votes weighed by experience.

The APWG, on the other hand, is a collection of industry experts, including “more than 2,700 employees and contractors from more than 1,600 companies, governments ministries and non-governmental organizations,” according to the non-profit.

Both viewpoints are important to email security. With PhishTank feeding from the opinions of home users and the APWG relying on industry expertise, the end user will benefit from research from varying viewpoints.
