Credit unions, small banks see more phishing attacks

Attacks against small banks and credit unions remained on the rise last month, according to a recent fraud report from RSA Security.

Attacks on regional banks in the United States accounted for 33 percent of all phishing attacks on banks last month, with credit unions taking up 29 percent of all attacks. Non-American banks were 26 percent of all banking brands attacked by phishing in May, with nationwide U.S. banks only accounting for 11 percent of phishing attacks.

Thirty-seven percent of non-U.S. banks targeted by phishing attacks were based in the United Kingdom, with Australian and Spanish banks both being targeted by 15 percent of phishing attacks. Canadian and German banks were both targeted by 11 percent of phishing attacks.

"Almost 40 percent of the non-U.S. attacks were aimed at non-English speaking countries in May, with Spain, Germany and the Netherlands the most notable," the study noted.

The number of brands targeted also rebounded from a recent low of only 93 in April, reaching 157 last month. Most of the new attacks targeted credit unions and regional banks, according to the report.

"The number of brands targeted by phishing reached an all-time high in May. After a significant drop in April, the number of brands skyrocketed from 93 to 157," noted the report. "Most of the new targeted banks this month were credit unions and several regional banks."
