Reps. Chaffetz, Cummings exchange charges over Clinton email server

Republicans and Democrats on the House Oversight Committee traded virtual blows during the last few days over the on-going saga surrounding presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's private email server.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and the committee's ranking Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) are the primary players this round with the former calling a hearing of several department directors next Monday to answer questions regarding data redacted from the report on Clinton's email server. Meanwhile, Cummings released an email exchange between Clinton and former Secretary of State Colin Powell in which he tells Clinton how to avoid having her phone and email communications tracked by the government, according to The Hill.

Chaffetz originally asked for the FBI, departments of Justice and State and the Director of National Intelligence to give a classified briefing to his committee on the redacted material. The agencies denied his request.

The hearing will take place on Sept. 12 at 5 pm.

Chaffetz has also called upon the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Channing Phillips to investigate the issue to determine if Clinton or her team illegally destroyed records.

“In light of this information, the Department should investigate and determine whether Clinton or her employees and contractors violated statutes that prohibit the destruction of records, obstruction of congressional inquiries, and concealment or cover up of evidence material to a congressional investigation,” Chaffetz wrote to Phillips.

Cummings said in a written statement that Republicans are simply trying to derail her presidential campaign.

“The Republican obsession with Secretary Clinton has reached a fever pitch, and they have been using taxpayer resources to single her out in a desperate and abusive attempt to hurt her presidential campaign,” Cummings wrote.
