Employee sends info on 2,000 to personal email address, gets fired

An employee with a private contractor for Colorado Medicaid was fired after sending an email to a personal account that contained sensitive information on almost 2,000 people.

How many victims? 1,918. 

What type of personal information? Names, addresses, dates of birth, telephone numbers, Medicaid identification numbers, and health conditions.

What happened? An employee with a private contractor for Colorado Medicaid sent an email containing the sensitive information to a personal email address.

What was the response? Colorado Medicaid is notifying those impacted in the incident. The private contractor, Colorado Community Health Alliance (CCHA), retained a laptop and fired the employee. The employee signed a release saying the email was deleted. The case has been referred to federal authorities.

Details: The email was sent on Nov. 21 and the CCHA learned of it a day later. Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing said the employee may have used the information for personal business use.
