Western wear retailer Sheplers is notifying an undisclosed number of customers that their payment card information may have been exposed after hackers gained access to its payment systems.
How many victims? Undisclosed. A media contact told SCMagazine.com on Wednesday that Sheplers is “aware of fraud reports from a few dozen customers,” but did not immediately respond to follow-up questions asking how many payment cards may have been compromised, or how many individuals were notified.
What type of personal information? Names, account numbers for both credit and debit cards, and card expiration dates.
What happened? Access was gained to the Sheplers payment system and payment card information was exposed.
What was the response? An investigation is ongoing. New security measures have been implemented. Impacted customers are being offered free fraud protection services.
Details: The breach potentially impacts customers who used payment cards at Sheplers retail locations between June 11 and Sept. 4. The incident is not believed to have impacted the online store. There is no evidence that debit card PINs have been compromised.
