Breach, Data Security

Hackers access data on more than 160K Butler University students and staffers

Around 163,000 Butler University students, alumni, faculty, staff and prospective students are being notified that their personal information – including Social Security numbers and bank account information – may have been compromised in a hacking incident dating back to 2013.

How many victims? About 163,000.

What type of personal information? Names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and bank account information.

What happened? As part of an identity theft investigation, California law enforcement arrested a suspect who was in possession of a flash drive containing personal information on Butler University staff and faculty. An internal investigation – aided by third-party forensics experts – revealed that the data may have been stolen by hackers who gained unauthorized access to the Butler University computer network.

What was the response? The investigation is ongoing. All impacted individuals are being notified and offered a free year of identity theft protection services.

Details: The computer network may have been accessed between November 2013 and May.

Quote: “Unfortunately, we do think it's a remote hacking,” Michael Kaltenmark, a Butler University spokesperson, said. “The suspect that's been arrested has no affiliation with Butler University.”
