A word from co-chair Dan Lohrmann

The more things change, the more things stay the same. This wise proverb has never been more evident than at the 2009 SC Awards U.S. Dinner & Presentation. From the historic election of President Barack Obama to the global economic downturn, our world has witnessed unprecedented change in the past year.

Since last April, internet attacks have accelerated and visits into cyberspace have become more dangerous for the majority in society. The statistics are scary. The bad guys are well-funded and are getting better at disrupting electronic commerce, online business transactions and other internet activities.

But, despite these challenges, popular social networks have transformed how we interact at home, school and work. Businesses have implemented cutting-edge technology to enable innovation and cross-boundary partnerships. Virtual interactions now offer new opportunities for research, training and e-government.

What has stayed the same? Through the years, innovative security solutions continue to be the glue that enables technical progress. As online risks grow, governments and businesses continue to rely on new products and services from trusted security professionals and respected industry partners to protect them.

The most important constant has been the perseverance offered by so many in the information security community. Through dedication to excellence, integrity, customer service and “outside the box” thinking, these corporations, teams and individuals offer a better way. Many of these exceptional companies are here tonight. Your efforts offer hope as we move forward toward building end-to-end trust and redeeming cyberspace.

Tonight, we recognize the outstanding contributions offered by the best and the brightest. I want to congratulate the winners, as well as everyone who was nominated for an award. Thank you for what you do. You are making a positive difference.
