Five nations spew spam

Five countries are hosting 99.68 per cent of spammer websites, according to new research.

Anti-spam firm Commtouch found that in the first six months of 2004, the U.S. continued to lead as the main origin of spam, with nearly 55.6 per cent of all spam being sent from the country. Asia was second, creating more than 20 per cent of spam.

The firm's research said that there have been 350,000 unique spam outbreaks per day this year.

The firm analyzed millions of spam messages and found that drug adverts were the most prevalent form of merchandising, representing 29.53 per cent of all spam.

Pornography and casino spam messages declined to rates of 3.1 per cent and 0.45 per cent of global spam, respectively.

Commtouch also found that China led all countries in the hosting of websites referenced in spam messages at 73.58 per cent.
