A £100 million contract is up for grabs to improve security and communication between intelligence agencies in the fight against terrorism.

The four firms shortlisted for the contract are Fujitsu, IBM, Electronic Data Systems and BT Syntegra.

The project, called Scope, will be controlled by the Security Secretariat and the Cabinet Office Intelligence, and will create resource for government agencies including MI5, MI6, the Home Office and the Foreign Office.

Since the theft of an MI5 laptop and a briefcase in 2000, the Government has sought to avoid similar embarrassment. It is expected that the contract will focus on protecting mobile devices.
