Laptop theft endangers names, SSNs of 20,000 CUNY students

The City University of New York has sent letters to as many as 20,000 students notifying them that a laptop was stolen that contained their personal information.

What types of personal information?
Names and Social Security numbers.

What was the response? Affected students were sent letters Oct. 19, urging them to take steps to protect their identities.

University officials reported the theft to police.

Details:
The laptop was stolen from a financial aid office.

University officials could not pinpoint a date when the theft occurred.

Officials said the laptop wasn’t functional, and sensitive day was password protected.

Quote: “It’s ridiculous,” said Ken Krivac, whose daughter attended Queensborough Community College. ‘It’s a young girl starting off in life and everything’s been compromised.”
