San Mateo Foster City School District employee PII compromised in breach

The San Mateo Foster City School District (SMFCSD) reported that personal information of active employees was compromised when a thumb drive containing the sensitive data was lost.

How many victims? Unknown

What type of information? Officials have yet to determine what exact information was on the drive but did say it included full names, addresses, and social security numbers. No financial information was reportedly compromised.

What happened? On April 6, officials were informed that the thumb drive was “inadvertently misplaced.” The district said that it has devoted a considerable amount of time and effort to attempt to locate the thumb drive.

What was the response? The district's incident response team promptly launched an investigation and has been working closely with cybersecurity professionals. Officials said that they are not aware of any reports of fraud or harmful activity that has resulted from the incident. Those affected have been offered a year of free identity protection services.  

Quote: “Please accept my sincere apologies on behalf of the San Mateo Foster City School District, that this incident occurred,” a school official whose name was redacted said in the breach notice. “We are committed to maintaining the privacy of your information and have taken many precautions to help safeguard it.”
