Thought Leader – Chris Schueler

Category: Thought Leader

Name: Chris Schueler

Title: SVP, Managed Security Services

Company: Trustwave

Why nominated: At a time when cyberattacks and threats are on a sharp rise both in frequency and severity, Chris Schueler has been a driving force in shaping how large organizations incorporate the managed security model as a compliment to internal security.

Profile: An actionable intelligence visionary and security maturity champion, Chris Schueler has led global cyber consolidation at Trustwave. He has assembled a threat research team that has discovered multiple zero-day exploits, thwarted malware campaigns, and exposed the activities of cybercriminal groups like Carbanak.

Schueler envisioned and architected the Trustwave SpiderLabs Fusion Center, which is composed of multiple intelligence units specializing in areas such as threat hunting, security reasons, incidence response and pen testing. The center also monitors, detects and instantly kills threats within an organization's footprint – right down to individual endpoints.

Through the fusion center, Schueler has assembled monthly public think tanks consisting of CIOs, CISOS, security analysts and IT professionals representing a broad cross-section of industry sectors, and also developed new certification and extended education programs.

He has put a priority on bolstering certification and education programs, developing rigorous training curricula for penetration testing, incidence response, data forensics and others areas to keep security practitioners up-to-date on how to defend against advanced threats.

Schueler came to Trustwave by way of IBM, where he built successful businesses in the cloud industry with a specialization in managed services. His résumé also includes stints at Internet Security Systems, the Department of Defense and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

What colleagues say: Schueler “possesses qualities you look for in a thought leader… In taking charge to innovate…he made the following important conclusions:

• Organizations are inherently frustrated with the managed security service provider industry in terms of inflexibility, and empty alerts.

• Organizations want more personalization (not less) when it comes to security collaboration.

• Security companies frequently talk about their great security research and capabilities, but rarely are those experts in a position to make a real impact on day-to-day security operations…

Addressing these issues head-on, Chris embarked on several key initiatives for improving internal collaboration across teams…Chris's vision for the Trustwave SpiderLabs Fusion Center is truly a game changer. Like many, our SOC system has a global footprint where customers can take advantage of threat intelligence and apply it to operations. The Fusion Center goes several steps further taking that intelligence to look for patterns and indicators of compromise to make recommendations and/or take immediate action.”
