Eurofins Scientific, the U.K.’s largest provider of forensic services, paid up after a ransomware attack a month ago.
The company carries out DNA testing, toxicology analysis, firearms testing and computer forensics for police forces across the country so court hearings were postponed as a result of the attack due to the results of analysis conducted by Eurofins not being accessible, according to the BBC.
Eurofins didn’t disclose how much it paid to retrieve its information but the money was likely paid between June 10, when Eurofins issued a statement about the attack, and June 24 when it published an update saying it had “identified the variant of the malware used” in the attack and had strengthened its cybersecurity.
The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) who managed the emergency police response to the incident refused to comment on the issue and police and law enforcement agencies in the UK are still not submitting new samples to Eurofins for analysis.
The Crown Prosecution Service said the investigation is ongoing and that prosecutors will assess the impact on a case by case basis.
