NY AG warns lawyers of phishing campaign

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is warning lawyers in the Big Apple to beware of a phishing campaign whose missives claim to be from him.

Malicious emails disguised as a complaint against the lawyer's firm/business with a subject line claiming to be from The Office of The State Attorney have been sent to lawyers in the state, according to a Nov. 30 AG press release.

An example of one of the emails was generically addressed to a “Bar Member” and instructed the recipient to view a malicious link. The email also told recipients that they only had 10 days to respond and that the Office of The State Attorney cannot render legal advice nor can The Office of The State Attorney represent individuals or intervene on their behalf in any civil or criminal matter.

Attorney General Schneiderman warned that users should exercise caution when opening suspicious emails, call the sender instead of opening the suspicious email, use the latest anti-virus software, and report suspicious activity.
