Researchers spot mediocre ‘Mr. Robot’ inspired malware

Mimicking the popular television show Mr. Robot, a group of malware authors has launched a series of threats using the show's “FSociety” brand.

MalwareHunterTeam researchers spotted a DDoS booster service named "fs0ciety" which comes with a Skeeyah malware downloader, a screen lockers, a rebooter described as a screen locker wannabe, and crypto-ransomware variants, according to Bleeping Computer.

While the TV show's FSociety group carries out complex attacks which involve social engineering, software exploits, hardware hacks and malware, researchers said the real world imitation of the group has failed to impress and some have boarded incompetency, researchers said. One of the screen lockers developed by a Portuguese-speaking malware author, was removed simply by typing in “Senha” which is Portuguese for “password.”

While some security professionals inspired the show to influence this sort of behavior, the wave of FSociety-themed malware only started appearing long after the end of the shows second season.
