Kaspersky Lab is still in the spotlight as Senators have decoded to bar the Pentagon from using any of the cybersecurity firm’s software. Although the company has repeatedly denied having connected to Russian intelligence, the company has caught the attention of lawmakers on Capitol Hill given the current investigations into Moscow’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

A recent analysis by Mozilla on the Alexa top one million websites points to a majority of the sites lacking the adequate defensive security technology. Most of the websites analyzed as part of Mozilla’s comprehensive security review earned an “F” letter grade, according to a Mozilla Security blog post. By leveraging its Observatory tool, the Mozilla Foundation was able dos can the top one million sites to come to its conclusions.

A new study by security firm Kaspersky Lab shed light on three sectors in which the NotPetya malware wreaked havoc. Of the total companies impacted by the malware, banks, manufacturers, and oil and gas utilities compromised roughly 82% of the attacked companies, according to the study, reported on by SC Media.

CYBER ESPIONAGE

A news website aimed at covering China was the target of a cyber espionage campaign that leveraged phishing tactics and the infamous NetWire remote access trojan (RAT). The China Digital Times has been affected by the cyber assaults since February 2017. The attacks are believed to be part of a wider campaign of phishing, reconnaissance and malware operations.

Internet radio and playlist service 8trackshas suffered a database breach that has resulted in the compromised information of up to 18 million users. The music streaming site shared via a blog post that only users who signed up for the service using their email address are affected by the breach, while those who signed up via Google or Facebook authentication are “not affected by this leak.”

Israeli cybersecurity startup Fireglass has been acquired by Symantec. The deal is aimed bolstering Symantec’s corporate email and web browsing offering. Fire glass specializes in “browser isolation,” a technology that produces virtual websites that allow users to browse any content that blocks malware from touching the network. The terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.
