Moonfruit experiences DDoS, renewed threats, takes customer sites down

Moonfruit took its customer websites out of service Monday for “up to 12 hours,” after suffering a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack and being under threat of further cyber-attacks.

In an email to its customers, the BBC reported that Moonfruit apologized for the “short notice” that sites would be down and said in a statement posted this morning and tweeted by Gra, “We planned for ever eventuality over the weekend, but the final decision to go ahead with these specific changes was made this morning.”

Attackers first hit the website-building service's site on December 10 and then threatened more harm. "We have been working with law enforcement agencies regarding this matter and have spared no time or expense in ensuring we complete the work as quickly as possible," the Moonfruit statement said The company is making what it calls “significant infrastructure changes which will offer us the best protection against these attacks” going forward.

But the interruption—during the busy holiday shopping season—comes at a bad time for many of the small businesses that use Moonfruit. “Thanks @moonfruit for taking both my websites down today due to a cyber attack,” tweeted Mark Smith. “I appreciate your doing what you can but it's bad timing!”
