After posting an offensive story about the young woman who was killed when an alleged white nationalist rammed his car into a group of protesters in Charlottesville, Va. over the weekend, neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer reportedly was given 24 hours by GoDaddy to find a new online home, although a message on the site indicates that Anonymous has moved the deadline up.
“This site is now under the control of Anonymous,” which said it took over the site in the name of victim Heather Heyer. “We have all of the details on the servers and will be releasing the data when we feel the time is right.”
The message also noted that Anonymous has gathered location data on Daily Stormer founder Andrew Anglin, promising to send its allies to visit him in person in Lagos.
“It took a united force of elite hackers from around the world to breach the systems and the firewall,” Anonymous wrote, claiming to have monitored the website for months and being spurred to take action after violence erupted in Charlottesville.
GoDaddy had set its deadline after complaints were lodged against the site. “We informed The Daily Stormer that they have 24 hours to move the domain to another provider, as they have violated our terms of service,” GoDaddy tweeted in response to the complaints. Blogger Amy Siskind, president and co-founder of The New Agenda, who led the charge to have the site taken down, had also been singled out by the site and subsequently became target of a “trollstorm,” resulting in her address and phone number reportedly being published.
Just hours after GoDaddy told the Daily Stormer that it would no longer host its site and the message from Anonymous appeared on it, the neo-Nazi organization registered with, and was quickly spurned by, Google.
"We are canceling Daily Stormer's registration with Google Domains for violating our terms of service,” the company said in a statement.
UPDATE: This story has been updated to include a statement from Google, which also declined to host the Daily Stormer website.
