Interest in encrypted email spikes following Trump win

Government-resistant, end-to-end encrypted email services received a spike in interest following Donald Trump's win in the U.S. presidential election, according to The Register.

According to statistics published by ProtonMail, after the election results were in, new user sign-ups for privacy-focused services doubled.

Company CEO Andy Yen said potential new users expressed interest in his company's offerings owing to apprehension about what surveillance capabilities President Trump might prompt.

"Given Trump's campaign rhetoric against journalists, political enemies, immigrants and Muslims, there is concern that Trump could use the new tools at his disposal to target certain groups," Yen said. "As the NSA currently operates completely out of the public eye with very little legal oversight, all of this could be done in secret."

ProtonMail, Yen added, is used by those concerned with government snooping, whether they're liberals or right-leaning users.
