For users thinking that their Apple macOS machines are more secure than PCs, think again.
A new security threat uncovered by researchers at AlienVault is aimed at compromising macOS machines. Advertised as the “most sophisticated Mac spyware ever,” MacSpy is considered the first malware-as-a-service virus seen on the OS X platform, according to an AlienVault blog post by Security Researcher Peter Ewane.
The malware authors created MacSpy due to the increasing popularity of Apple products, as well as the lack of “sophisticated malware for Mac users.”
A free version of the remote access Trojan allows cyber miscreants to exfiltrate data, log keystrokes, capture screenshots, obtain photos synced with iCloud, as well as obtain browsing history from Safari and Chrome.
For those willing to pay an unknown amount of bitcoins, an upgraded version of MacSpy features a slew of advanced features.
