ManTech acquires HBGary for its anti-malware products

Federal government IT services provider ManTech International has acquired HBGary, which makes technology to detect advanced and targeted malware.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The buy is meant to further solidify ManTech's continued expansion into the cyber security market.

"ManTech will give HBGary significant and positive growth, expanding our opportunities," HBGary CEO Greg Hoglund said in a news release. "HBGary's commercial customers will benefit from the addition of ManTech's world-class incident response services, and ManTech's government business will be bolstered with a cutting edge set of products to protect mission-critical IT assets."

HBGary may be best known for falling victim to a devastating hack in January 2011, which also targeted its now-defunct sister firm, HBGary Federal. The attacks, perpetrated by the Anonymous collective, resulted in tens of thousands of emails being posted, some of which pointed to coordinated efforts to discredit groups such as WikiLeaks and U.S. Chamber Watch.

The former on Monday began releasing some five million stolen emails from global affairs firm Stratfor, after Anonymous also hacked that organization.
