Over half (53 percent) of companies have at least one instance of Windows Server 2003 still running even though its end of life (EOL) date passed on 14 July 2015.
Spiceworks conducted research on more than 800 IT pros from various industries across the globe and discovered that 76 percent of organisations take advantage of virtualisation today, and the number will continue to grow.
When researchers looked at anonymised, aggregated usage data, they found VMware vSphere ESXi is used by 71 percent of organisations, compared to a 23 percent adoption rate for Microsoft Hyper-V. Only six percent of organisations use other hypervisors such as Citrix XenServer.
While 24 percent of server OSes are Windows Server 2012, 45 percent are still Windows Server 2008 and 18 percent of VMs and servers are stuck on Windows Server 2003.
Almost all (88 percent) organisations' servers run the Microsoft Windows Server OS.
Only half of respondents feel that their organisation's data is adequately protected and consider IT security a top priority for 2016. Almost 60 percent believe their organisation is not adequately investing in IT security.
“It's still true that even in a high tech sector, your weakest point is your users. Ensure that all employees are being careful or train them to be better,” said Lisa Lyons, network/systems admin, Granta Design.
