Albany, New York was hit with a ransomware attack on March 30 that has shut down an undetermined number of several city services.
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan informed the public of the attack in a tweet on Saturday. Few details of the attack have been issued by city officials, but Sheehan did tell all city employees to come to work and that the building would be open to the public starting at Noon on Monday.
Some services are operating, but the mayor said those seeking copies of marriage, birth and death certificates need to apply in person and to go to the neighboring city of Troy, N.Y. to apply for a marriage license.
SC Media reached out to Albany’s spokesman for further details. Liron Barak, CEO of BitDam, told SC Media, "The bottom line is that cities offer a great opportunity for attackers, who look for easy targets with high value. Municipal governments must respond quickly and adopt a security approach that will protect its infrastructure and its citizens."
