Russian cyberattacks might effect our upcoming election, says German Chancellor Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed concern that Russia might interfere with elections next year in Germany in a manner similar to how U.S. intelligence agencies claimed it did with the U.S. presidential election. Russia has repeatedly denied the accusations.

When asked at a press conference in Berlin whether she thought Russia might attack some aspect of the electoral process in Germany – similar to how Russia purportedly breached the Democratic National Committee (DNC) – she responded: "We are already, even now, having to deal with information out of Russia or with internet attacks that are of Russian origin or with news which sows false information," she told reporters, according to The Hill. "So it may be that this could also play a role during the election campaign."

Rainer Rupp, a former German intelligence officer, refuted Merkel's claim in an interview with RT. She is adopting strategies used by the Democrats in attempting to create an existential threat in the form of Russia to divert attention from her party's shortcomings and failed policies, he said.
