Persirai Overtakes Mirai in IoT Botnet Turf War

By Marcos Colon

Following the success of Mirai, other IoT malware began to spawn, and now there’s one botnet that may be more powerful.

In May, security researchers at Trend Micro first spotted the Persirai botnet taking advantage of disclosed vulnerabilities in Chinese-made internet-connected cameras. At the time, researchers detected approximately 120,000 IP cameras vulnerable to the malware, and recent research indicates that the botnet may be growing in strength.

“Early last month we discussed a new Internet of Things botnet called Persirai, which targets over 1000 Internet Protocol (IP) camera models,” Trend Micro threat analysts wrote in a recent blog post. “Currently, through Shodan and our own research, we see that 64% of tracked IP cameras with custom http servers are infected with Persirai.”

Seeing as the cameras are common targets, Trend Micro believes there’s competition between IoT malware families. Now, Persirai seems to be leading the pack.
