The European Union is ignoring the United States call to ban Huawei over cyber espionage fears and on Tuesday recommended a set of security guidelines for the rollout of its 5G networks.
The tech giant will be supplying technology for the next-generation network despite the U.S. having long voiced concerns that Huawei technology, along with its fellow Chinese telecom company ZTE, could act as a backdoor for the Chinese government to spy on the West.
The U.S. has already banned the use of equipment or services explicitly from Huawei in any federal agencies or their contractors prompting backlash from the Chinese tech firm including a lawsuit claiming the US government failed to produce evidence to back up its security claims.
The EU urged member states to assess cyberthreats to their infrastructures and that information should be shared with other EU countries to develop a set of mitigating measure.
"Any vulnerability in 5G networks or a cyber-attack targeting the future networks in one Member State would affect the Union as a whole," the European Commission stated. "This is why concerted measures taken both at national and European levels must ensure a high level of cybersecurity."
