Three patches due from Microsoft on Tuesday

PC users will be able to download three new security updates for Microsoft products next Tuesday.

Two of the bulletins - part of the Redmond, Wash., software giant's monthly Patch Tuesday release schedule - will be for Windows, and the third will affect Microsoft Exchange.

All three updates may require a restart, and they will all be detectable by the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, according to a company advance notification.

Microsoft said this month's release may contain a bit of extra work for system administrators.

"One thing regarding the Exchange update we wanted to call out especially for planning purposes: this update will include the functionality change discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 912918," said Christopher Budd, security program manager at the Microsoft Security Response Center on the company's TechNet website. "So, we urge administrators to go ahead and review this Knowledge Base article prior to release and take steps appropriate for their environment."

Microsoft released five patches last month, including a cumulative patch for Internet Explorer. Some security experts had urged Redmond to release an early patch for the createTextRange() vulnerability, which had gained widespread notoriety in the weeks leading up to Patch Tuesday.

Microsoft released two patches in March, one of which fixed numerous vulnerabilities for Microsoft Office.
