A recent study found that 73 percent of security pros admitted to ineffectively using threat intelligence data effectively and part of the reason can be attributed to an overload of information.
The study queried 1,072 security industry professionals survey and found the top reasons for the lack of inefficiency include a lack of staff expertise(69 percent of respondents), lack of ownership (58 percent), and lack of suitable technologies (52 percent), according to “The Value of Threat Intelligence: A Study of North American and United Kingdom Companies” report.
To make matters worse, the study found that only 46 percent of respondents are even using threat data when deciding how to respond to malicious activity and 70 percent of respondents felt that threat intelligence is often too voluminous and/or complex to provide actionable insights.
“Security providers do a great job of gathering and storing data,” Ponemon Institute Chairman and Founder Dr. Larry Ponemon said in a Nov. 1 statement. “Now, they need to simplify it and make it actionable so that security teams and top executives can make decisions that protect their businesses from surging attacks.”
He went on to say that there is a need for providers to help companies cut through the noise to find the threat intelligence that is relevant and actionable.
