Never stop asking ‘why’ says security veteran

Founder and Sequitur CEO Phil Attfeild is an electrical engineer by training and a tinkerer by nature. He attributed his innate curiosity in how things work, which began in his youth, by asking the question “why.”

CISO Stories host Sam Curry, who has known Attfeild for quite a long time, was reminded of a question Attfield asked several years ago: If you took a box full of today’s technology back in time, what would the people of 1970 build with it? Would they build the same things?

Listen to episode 24 of CISO Stories: “Always be a Student, Always be Learning”

“It’s a combination of evolution and looking forward and trying to anticipate what is it this thing is supposed to do? And if you went back 20 years, is there even a need for that and did you realize it? Who’d have thought 40 years ago you’d ever have a PC?”

What would he say to an engineering student who might want to pursue security? “Learn. Keep learning and ask questions.”

Attfield has more than 20 years of industry experience in large enterprises and small entrepreneurial firms. He has worked at Nortel, founded Signal 9 Solutions, and has worked in the Phantom Works/R&D division of The Boeing Company.
