GFI EndPoint Security

GFI EndPoint Security provides "allow" or "deny" access to endpoint-based devices on network computers running the product's small agent service. These devices can include removable media, such as USB drives, CompactFlash, memory cards, CDs or floppies, as well as PDAs, BlackBerry handhelds, mobile phones, smart phones and other communication devices. This product also goes a step further and controls access to media players, network cards, and other network communications.

The initial installation is done from an executable that launches a short setup wizard. After the completion of the setup wizard, configuration is done using a quick-start dialog that guides admins through setting up user groups, database plug-in, alerting options and basic policy configuration. Once initial configuration is complete, all further configuration and management is done using the GFI management console application. We found this console to be easy to use and intuitive to navigate with a tab-top navigation structure.

Agent and policy deployment is also done through this console. Network computers can be easily organized into groups for granular policy control. Policies can also be set for specific computer types - such as workstations, servers or laptops - which allow administrators to dole out different policies to meet the needs of different situations and user types.

Documentation included a single PDF user guide, which covers the product from initial installation through configuration and management. We found it to be well organized and easy to follow with many step-by-step instructions, configuration examples and screen shots.

GFI offers one year of support included in the purchase price. Support includes 24/5 phone and email technical support. After the first year, customers can purchase additional support at 20 percent of the product price. There is also a free support area on the website, which includes a knowledge base and user forum.

At a price of $600 for 25 computers, we find this product to be a good value for the money. The per computer price works out to $24, and this product provides a lot of features for the price.
