Trend Micro Data Loss Prevention

Data Loss Prevention from Trend Micro consists of two parts. The first is the management server, which provides central control and enforcement of policy. This server is available in several forms, including a hardware, software or virtual appliance. The second piece is the endpoint software, which maintains communication with the policy server and enforces the policy on the endpoint itself. This product also uses Trend Micro's DataDNA fingerprinting, which allows data to be solidly secured while at rest, in motion or in use.

Installation of this product is comprised of two phases. The first phase is installing the appliance itself. Once we downloaded and burned the appliance ISO file to CD we put it in our test server. The system sits on top of Red Hat Enterprise Server so the installation wizard felt very comfortable and easy-to-follow. Once the appliance was installed we were able to access the web-based management console for additional configuration. The second part of installation is deploying the agents. Agent deployment can be done in several ways, but we found the easiest was creating an installation package using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager. Once the agents were deployed and the server was running we were able to start creating policies.

We found the management interface to be easy to navigate and well organized. Configuring policies was quite simple and the system comes preloaded with many compliance-based templates already in place and ready to go.

Documentation included an installation and administrator guides. The installation guide provided steps for installing and configuring both the server and the endpoint agents, while the administrator guide detailed using the console and system functions. Both guides included many screen shots and step-by-step instructions, as well as examples.

Trend Micro offers both free and premium support. Support included with purchase offers customers phone support between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. PST, as well as access to online case submission. Premium support levels offer 24/7 phone support and a technical account manager. There is also a large support area on the website with a knowledge base and many other resources that are available to customers at no cost.

At a price starting just under $24 per user, this product is a good value for almost any size environment. We find the Data Loss Prevention system to have a good amount of flexibility in an easy-to-use format.
