SC Media Comprehensive Whitelisting Guide for System Administrators

As a system administrator, you play a crucial role in ensuring seamless communication between organizations. This guide will help you whitelist our sender domain, @scmagazine.com, across various email servers and spam filters. The instructions provided below may vary depending on the specific version of your email server or spam filter.

Microsoft Exchange Server:

  1. Open the Exchange Admin Center (EAC).
  2. Navigate to "Mail Flow" and then "Rules."
  3. Click the "+" icon to create a new rule.
  4. Select "Create a new rule..." and name the rule (e.g., "Whitelist SC Media").
  5. Under "Apply this rule if...," select "The sender..." and then "Domain is."
  6. Enter our sender domain: @scmagazine.com and click "OK."
  7. Under "Do the following...," choose "Modify the message properties..." and then "Set the spam confidence level (SCL) to..."
  8. Set the SCL value to -1 (Bypass spam filtering) and click "OK."
  9. Save the rule and ensure that it's enabled.

Postfix:

  1. Access your Postfix configuration file (usually located at /etc/postfix/main.cf).
  2. Add our sender domain to the "smtpd_sender_restrictions" parameter as follows:
  3. smtpd_sender_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, check_sender_access hash:/etc/postfix/sender_whitelist, reject_unauth_destination
  4. Create a new file named "sender_whitelist" in the /etc/postfix/ directory.
  5. Add the following line to the "
  6. sender_whitelist" file: @scmagazine.com OK
  7. Save the file and run the following command to create a lookup table: postmap /etc/postfix/sender_whitelist
  8. Reload the Postfix configuration with the command: postfix reload

Sendmail:

  1. Open your Sendmail configuration file (usually located at /etc/mail/access).
  2. Add the following line to the file:
  3. GreetPause:@scmagazine.com 0
  4. Save the file and run the following command to rebuild the access database:
  5. makemap hash /etc/mail/access.db < /etc/mail/access
  6. Restart the Sendmail service to apply the changes.

Exim:

  1. Access your Exim configuration file (usually located at /etc/exim.conf or /etc/exim/exim.conf).
  2. Locate the "acl_check_rcpt" ACL configuration section.
  3. Add the following lines to the "accept" section: accept senders = : @lsearch;/etc/exim/sender_whitelist
  4. Create a new file named "sender_whitelist" in the /etc/exim/ directory.
  5. Add our sender domain to the "sender_whitelist" file: @scmagazine.com
  6. Save the file and restart the Exim service to apply the changes.

SpamAssassin:

  1. Access your SpamAssassin configuration file (usually located at /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf).
  2. Add the following line to the file:
  3. whitelist_from *@scmagazine.com
  4. Save the file and restart the SpamAssassin service to apply the changes.

Mimecast:

  1. Log in to your Mimecast Admin Console.
  2. Navigate to the "Administration" menu and select "Gateway" and then "Policies."
  3. Click on the "New Policy" button located on the top right corner of the page.
  4. From the "Definitions" menu, choose "Permitted Senders."
  5. Click "Next" to start creating the policy.
  6. Provide a policy name (e.g., "Whitelist SC Media") and an optional description.
  7. Under "Emails From," select "Specific Address" from the drop-down menu.
  8. In the "Specific Address" field, enter our sender domain: @scmagazine.com
  9. In the "Policy" section, choose the "Permit" option.
  10. Set the "Policy Narrative" to reflect the purpose of the policy (e.g., "Permit emails from SC Media").
  11. Under "Apply Policy To," specify the users or groups within your organization that this policy should apply to.
  12. Click "Save and Exit" to finalize the policy.
  13. Once the policy has been saved, Mimecast will allow emails from our sender domain to bypass certain checks and deliver them directly to the recipients' inboxes.
