A Florida call center, which was previously sued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) during a 2014 tech support scam investigation, has reportedly fallen victim to an insider breach.
On Thursday, IDG News Service reported that an alert was posted to the website for Advanced Tech Support, the company in question, also doing business as Inbound Call Experts.
The warning, since removed from the site, said that ATS customers reported calls from scammers posing as company representatives. Suspicious callers apparently mentioned details of past orders before requesting remote access to customers' computers to disperse a supposed refund to their online bank accounts.
ATS said in the alert, which was viewable as recently as Wednesday, that it “believes it has found the culprit and terminated the responsible party” – apparently an employee who was able to access customer records.
