Network Security

Encryption and explication

Still more revelations about National Security Agency (NSA) operations and practices that intrude on U.S. citizens' privacy and seemingly make a mockery of Constitutional rights have emerged, leaving both the general public and experts in the technology space reeling. On top of learning about the likelihood that the agency has been compromising encryption standards to gain access to various and sundry data and communications, details now have emerged that the NSA regularly shares raw data with Israel that it fails to scrub of information about U.S. citizens.

A favorite topic of mine as of late has been scarily Orwellian NSA maneuvers that seemingly stomp all long-held rights without any fear of retribution, and exemplify for us yet again the widespread hubris with which the NSA and federal government leaders operate.

While I could go on about the pervasive industry disgust and reaction to these latest eye-openers, I instead wish to use this month's commentary space to talk about SC's current stellar staff, who, of course, stay on top of breaking news like that which endlessly streams from the NSA – and, sadly, a member we have lost.

So to begin, our very own Executive Editor Dan Kaplan, who has been with us almost eight fertile and fantastic years, has moved on. We'll miss him terribly in our bullpen everyday, but we take solace in the fact that we'll be seeing him frequently nonetheless given the new position he has accepted as manager of digital content at industry vendor Trustwave. I'm currently on the hunt for a skilled wordsmith who is armed with all the desirable journalistic, editorial and managerial chops I'll need to help lead a still-growing team of editorial and production stars. My hope is that I'll be sharing news of such an addition to our tight-knit team in this very space next month.

Meantime, alongside venerable team members, which include Art Director Mike Strong, Managing Editor Greg Masters, Digital Content Coordinator Marcos Colón, Reporter Danielle Walker, Technology Editor (and Norwich University CSO) Peter Stephenson, SC Lab Manager Mike Stephenson, Director of SC Lab Operations John Aitken, SC Lab Editorial Assistant Judy Traub, SC Congress Program Director Eric Green and a top-notch crew of savvy contributors, we've hired some other staffers.

Most recently on the editorial side of the house, Adam Greenberg already has established himself as an enthusiastic and committed reporter for SC Magazine, bringing with him desirable news and feature writing chops from North Jersey Media Group's Clifton Journal (distributed to 30,000 readers) and Daily News New York with its circulation of 600,000.

As well, we're happy to have on board a seasoned expert to lead all marketing efforts for SC Magazine and its bevy of editorial and commercial products in Phill Lofaso. He brings with him executive-level experience from CFO Publishing, Dow Jones & Company, Thomson Media and Nature Publishing Group.

The vibrancy of the IT security industry and our steadfast place in it contribute to our overall commitment to bringing you the most up-to-date and independent insight there is. Because of our devotion to and zeal for the vibrant IT security industry, SC Magazine is on a course for continual growth. Chances are that still more and new faces will join us to cover breaking news, showcase the work of top-notch CSOs or review a new inventive product. And that is definitely all good.
