Threat Seeker – Moshe Ben-Simon

Category: Threat Seeker

Name: Moshe Ben-Simon

Title:  Co-Founder & VP Services and TrapXLabs

Company: TrapX Security

Why nominated: For Ben-Simon's long-time dedication to the cybersecurity industry and his work to help secure the health care industry through TrapX's Medjack reports.

Profile: Moshe Ben-Simon helped found TrapX five years ago with the mission statement of developing advanced cybersecurity solutions with one goal being to deliver real-time monitoring and detecting advanced persistent threats and zero-day attacks in a network.

Perhaps Ben-Simone is best known for his Medjack reports that are designed to spread awareness of vulnerabilities most likely to be found within hospitals and the wider world.

The first Medjack report was issued in 2015 when TrapX was able to identify the attack vector that had hit three hospitals and has been followed each year with an updated version, most recently at RSA 2017. Here the report showed how attackers were using sophisticated methods to crack into networks and favored attacking devices that used older operating systems.

He was able to make these determinations by creating fake medical devices, placing them in an actual hospital setting to attract cybercriminals and then study their method of attack.

What colleagues say: “Moshe Ben-Simon has made an impact on the security industry in a variety of ways, one of the most notable being his contribution to the medjack reports. A number of hospitals have been the victims of these type of attacks, but Moshe helped bring attention to the problem. The healthcare space is a major hotspot for cyber-criminals, and their attacks are becoming more sophisticated. Thanks to the medjack reports, there is now a bigger conversation happening on how to protect healthcare devices.”
