Fraud reported after food vendor breach at Cal State University, Stanislaus

Thousands of students, staff and guests at California State University, Stanislaus, may have had their personal information exposed whencriminals compromised a food vendor's computer server.

What type of personal information? Names, credit card numbers and expiration dates.

How many victims? Unknown; investigators believe it could be in the thousands.

What happened? Sodexho, the campus food vendor for the Turlock, Calif. university, suffered a data breach. The incident does not appear to be related to hacking but to an opportunist stealing readily available data. Credit card transactions since have been suspended at the college's main dining hall and convenience store, which average 300 to 400 daily card transactions.

Details: Many students, employees and visitors are reporting fraudulent purchases, going back as long as two months ago, although police would not reveal how many victims and what dollar amount.

Quote: "The university will (for now on) be certifying that computer systems on campus are complying with security features." - Kristin Olsen, university spokeswoman.
