French digital advocacy groups challenge Privacy Shield

Two French internet rights associations have filed legal challenges against the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield, arguing  the joint agreement doesn't go far enough in protecting citizens from digital spying, Reuters reported Wednesday.

According to the report, French advocacy group La Quadrature du Net and the ISP and industry association French Data Network submitted challenges to the EU's Luxembourg-based General Court. The organizations specifically contend that the Privacy Shield provision calling for an ombudsman within the U.S. State Department to review privacy and surveillance complaints does not do enough to protect European citizens.

The Irish advocacy group Digital Rights Ireland previously filed a similar complaint against the Privacy Shield in October.
