Google faces lawsuit over childrens’ app charges

A class-action lawsuit was filed against Google this past week for allegedly allowing children to make purchases within Google Play store apps without their parents' consent.

A mother of two, whose child charged about $66 in a game called Run Jump Smash, filed the suit, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

Although Google requires users to enter their password before spending money in an app, the authorization lasts for 30 minutes. During that time, children can make unlimited purchases without further authentication.

Apple faced a similar lawsuit earlier this year. Some parents, in that case, were billed several thousand dollars in charges. The Federal Trade Commision settled with the technology company, and Apple agreed to refund $32.5 million to consumers. The company also created a password requirement for all in-app purchases.
