Home Depot is facing 44 civil lawsuits after a massive data breach earlier this year that impacted the payment cards of 56 million customers and compromised approximately 53 million email addresses.
The lawsuit news was released as part of the company's quarterly earnings report. Home Depot wrote that these 44 cases were filed in both Canada and the U.S. on behalf of customers, payment card brands, payment card issuing banks, shareholders and other seeking damages.
The company went on to say that it expects to incur, “significant legal and other professional services expenses” because of the breach.
Affected parties began filing lawsuits almost immediately after the breach was confirmed in early September. One Illinois man, Kelsey O'Brien, filed his case only two days after the confirmation, and almost a month later, a Canadian man filed a $500 million class-action lawsuit.
