Look how far we’ve come

I've always felt that working in the publishing industry, you lose whole swaths of time.

Partly, this is because your days are run by deadlines. On a monthly magazine like ours, it works like this: We plan our editions so far in advance, usually about two to three months, that our thoughts and associated assignments already are heading into the New Year at the same time that others are sleeping off the tryptophan from their Thanksgiving turkeys. That certainly has an effect on making days feel as if they have escaped us. But, it's more than just the deadlines absconding with our hours. When you're having a blast doing something you love, time simply strays… and that's an awesome thing to experience.

Fortunately, we here at SC Magazine get the chance everyday to cover and help shape a dynamic, critically important, interesting and also shifting and finicky industry. In the last 20 years, the information security space has morphed from a little known, often undervalued and sometimes misunderstood space to a widely accepted, mainstream and required part of our daily lives, whether at work or home.

This tremendous marketplace transformation, of course, has led to the extensive evolution of many of the industry's products and services, including our own. Almost serendipitously, to round out our two decades in the space and showcase how far both we and the industry itself have come, we just held our second annual SC World Congress (SCWC) Conference and Expo last month in New York. Established as a means to bring executive-level IT security professionals together to obtain useable, practical strategies from the industry's top minds, as well as enable them to network with their peers, the event also achieves another goal: It brings to life, in a very real and effective way, the pages of our monthly magazine and our corpulent, frequently updated website (read more about SCWC here).

This and other of our offerings reflect the demands made by the growing number of IT security professionals now sitting at boardroom tables to keep pace with this quickly advancing industry through access of timely, detailed and objective content. Just as the marketplace has seen a rise in the number of individuals leading information security initiatives in their companies and the number and diversity of products and services answering calls to protect critical data from cybercriminals, it also has witnessed the expansion and intensification of

SC Magazine's contributions. This entails all the news, features, product reviews, expert contributions and more that we strive to put in each month's edition of our publication and on our website, and that we stuff into relevant online events, the annual SCWC, other live happenings, research, supplementary publications, online videos, podcasts, weekly newsletters and now our new SC World Congress 24/7 interactive environment.

Yes, we and the industry of which we are a contented part, have flourished over these last 20 years. In my view, that's cause for celebration – even if the next two decades come bounding into sight before I can holler, “Happy anniversary, SC Maga…”
