Network Security

Me and my job: John Gibson, senior IT security officer, tTech Ltd.

How would you describe your job to average people?
My job is to assist customers with evaluating the levels of security risk in their environment and propose or implement mitigation and management solutions/controls.

Why did you get into IT?
Two reasons: One, because it affords me the opportunity to understand the challenges affecting businesses in this extremely dynamic industry. The second, it is one of the more challenging disciplines in IT. The landscape changes at a rapid rate and as a result it provides the perfect combination of endorphins and adrenaline, whether good or bad. I've never had a dull day since I've been in IT security.

What was one of your biggest challenges?
Getting customers to recognize that IT security should not be an afterthought when developing a new system. For the organization to thrive, it is essential that IT is part of the DNA of any system.

What keeps you up at night?
Thinking about how to increase the awareness of the decision-makers on IT security, so that proactive steps can be approved and implemented, thus avoiding the huge costs associated with recovering from a breach.

What makes you most proud?
I'm most proud of the customers for whom we have implemented IT security solutions. They now have a tremendous appreciation for IT security.

How would you use a magic IT security wand?
I would use it to remove fear, uncertainty and apprehension to IT security. Too many people are fearful that implementing IT security will result in restrictions that will make it difficult for their businesses to succeed, or many believe that so far they have been doing without it so what is the point of implementing it now.
