3.4 million B.C., Yukon student records lost with misplaced hard drive

Authorities in British Columbia say as many as 3.4 million student education records dating back to 1986 may be breached due to a misplaced backup hard drive.

The records date from between 1986-2009 and contain names, postal codes, grades and personal education numbers of students who attended schools in British Columbia and the Yukon during that period, according to the Global News.

The hard drive also contained additional information that includes more sensitive personal information, including 825 survey results from 2003 of teachers regarding their retirement plans; 1,052 personal education numbers, birth years for cancer survivors; and 9,273 personal education numbers and information regarding health and behavior issues for children in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development prior to 2006-2007.

Technology, Innovation and Citizens' Services department said a review of the incident will take place.
