China reportedly urges banks to dump IBM servers

In what is widely seen as a backlash against the U.S.'s decision to charge five Chinese military officers with economic espionage against a bevy of large American organizations, China's government is urging its country's banks to forego using IBM servers in favor of locally grown alternatives, according to a report from Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

In a statement sent to BusinessWeek, an IBM spokesman questioned the reports and said that the company “is not aware” of any such edict from the Chinese government, pointing to IBM's longstanding relationship with the country.

But last week, China protested the hacking charges leveled against the five officers and, later, in what was characterized as an effort to curb the kind of cyber spying revealed by Edward Snowden, vowed to scrutinize IT products and services for any security flaws that might facilitate cyber crime.
