Cisco issues first transparency report

Cisco issued its first transparency report earlier this week and elaborated on its procedures if it were to receive government requests for user data.

The company reported receiving zero requests for customer data from January to June 2014.

In a blog post on the report, Anthony Grieco, principal engineer, threat, research, intelligence and defense at Cisco, wrote: "As Cisco's products and services evolve to new models, we find ourselves coming in contact with our customer's data more regularly. We approach this role as stewards of this data with our customers interest foremost in our mind.”

The company defined its policy pertaining to possible requests and said in cases where the law permits, it will notify customers their data has been requested and ensure government agencies have “appropriate authority” to receive the information.

Exceptions will only be made in emergency cases.
