Feds not prosecuting enough cyberthieves, survey

Two-thirds of adults surveyed last month believe the government is inadequate in its pursuit and prosecution of cyberthieves, according to an ESET blog.

This perception comes despite the best efforts of government agencies. The problem is that there is a shortage of "dedicated cybercrime fighters, paid at competitive rates, equipped with the latest tools," Stephen Cobb, an ESET senior security researcher, wrote.

Years of security warnings from security researchers have gone unheeded, Cobb wrote. But, there is a silver lining: If those in positions of power are not taking adequate steps, the public recognizes the risks.

Cobb said with two-thirds of survey respondents expressing dismay that the government is not holding up its end of the bargain, then perhaps citizens just might step up to let their elected representatives know of their concern and to open pursestrings to address the computer crime situation.
